HONDA GYRO-X
(1986 - 1994)
The HONDA GYRO-X is a unique three-wheeler.
Its rear drive unit covered by a black plastic contains 2 stroke 50cc engine,
V-matic automatic transmission, mechanical non-slip differential gear and two wide tires.
The drive unit is attached to the chassis by a single shock suspension and can be tilted left or right,
so that the vehicle can lean like motorcycle while the drive unit keeps upright to the road surface.
The tilt joint uses Neithardt rubber dumper which provides counter torque as the main chassis banks deeper.
The vehicle has a parking brake lever. In addition to apply a parking brake to the rear wheel,
it locks the drive unit tilt joint --- so that the stand can be eliminated.
When it appeared on the market as a variation of Honda's three wheeler series,
not so much numbers sold. Somehow, the most of Pizza delivery company started to use Gyro-X as their delivery vehicle.
Therefore the GYRO-X is quite often called "Pizza house's bike".
The odometer had already counted more than 4000km when I acquired this fun machine
from one of my friends, and it was before the Pizza house's boom.
GYRO-X was quite convenient especially when a big luggage had to be carried.
Rishiri Island and Rebun Island (in Hokkaido) tour was extremely fun and was certainly one of the
best touring experiences of ours.
The 4 digits odometer counted more than 14000km afterwards,
until I had to say goodby to this lovely, durable and fun bike before we moved to the United States.
